appaloosa roaning in a Miniature Horse -  in pictures

Presented by C Spots Miniature Horses

This is a Falabella Miniature Horse named Toyland Taquito Brio. The photos show the progressive roaning associated with the "appaloosa roaning" that you see present in many of the appaloosa spotted breeds. Brio was lab tested to be homozygous for black.
Brio as a foal with a small hip blanket that looks like a butterfly with no spots
yearling after body clipped
late two year old- coat darkens considerably, mottling intensifies, still very little roaning
early three- eye rims get really light, some roaning beginning over the back- as an interesting note you can see the blond feathers he has on the hind fetlock/pastern.
early three- about a month and a half after last photo - roaning becoming quite heavy and a few dark spots can be seen.
4 years old. Blanket is almost totally obscured.
5 yrs old. You can just faintly see the blanket and a few dark spots have appeared.
fall of 5 yr old year. He darkens in the winter and lightens in the summer. He doesn't appear to have the same color/pattern from season to season as it always seems to change.
Toyland Taquito Brio's foals
C Spots HiCee Falabella - black with butterfly blanket with one large spot on right hip and a small right hind sock, big blaze.. Here he is age 4- no roaning. Dam is Toyland Terrilee- black with two sox and small scatter of white hairs (Terrilee is sired by Toyland Zodiac- leopard).
C Spots Justin Falabella - dark bay/seal bay with large blanket with spots and a large star. Dam is the same as with previous horse. Started roaning at age 2 and here at age 3 is starting to fill in the darker spots with the roaning. You can see a picture progress of his roaning from birth to current by clicking HERE.
Laneway.... "Joey"- dark bay with large star. born with no roaning and continuing to get more each summer over his topline. He is pictured here at age 2. He also developed the light eye skin tone as his sire did at the same age. His dam is a non-appaloosa dark bay mare. This is a awful picture of him from this angle- he's really quite handsome!
